    Importance of oils and fats for the Dutch economy increased

    The Dutch import and export of oils, fats and oilseeds grew strongly in 2017. With more than 8 billion euros the export of oils and fats (5 billion euros) and oilseeds (3.1 billion euros) is in the top of the most important product groups for the Dutch export of agricultural goods. The significance of the sector has also increased with the import of agricultural goods. With 5.5 billion euros of oils and fats and 3.9 billion euros of oilseeds, both imports and exports reached a record high in 2017.

  2. EP vote on RED II

    The European Parliament agreed to cap the contribution of crop-based biofuels toward national renewable targets for transport, and moved to end the use of palm oil in the production of biodiesel. In a vote on revising the Renewable Energy Directive, MEPs agreed a 12 percent transport target for renewable energy by 2030, 10 percent of which will be met with second-generation, waste-based biofuels and renewable electricity. They capped the contribution of first-generation crop-based biofuels at countries’ 2017 consumption levels, but no higher than 7 percent.

    New courses MVO Academy open for registration

    Under the header MVO Academy, MVO organises various courses, workshops and guest lectures concerning oils and fats. For example, a course on food safety is provided each year. We provide guest lectures about the sector and about a wide variety of different aspects of oils and fats at universities. In addition, there is a Digital MVO Knowledge Centre and there is the possibility for an in company training.

    WWF launches first Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard for Malaysia and Singapore

    The Palm Oil Buyers’ Scorecard – Malaysia and Singapore 2017 is an initiative to introduce transparency into Southeast Asia’s palm oil industry. Published by WWF, the Scorecard assesses the buying and sourcing of palm oil by local retailers, manufacturers and food service brands. The Scorecard also describes the relevance of palm oil to the regional economy and the importance of sustainable practices.

  9. The certification schemes EFISC and GTP join forces, merge as of 1 July 2017.

    Following several years of fruitful cooperation, the European Feed Ingredient Safety Certification Scheme (EFISC) and the COCERAL Good Trading Practice Code (GTP Code) Certification Scheme have decided to join forces thereby also making stronger use of synergies. As of 1st July 2017 GTP and EFISC certification schemes will operate jointly, under the new name “European Feed & Food Ingredients Safety Certification” Aisbl (EFISC-GTP).
