Second edition MVO course in April 2011
From 11 to 14 April 2011, the Product Board MVO organizes for the second time the course "Food Safety of Vegetable Oils and Fats". Once again, the course will be organized in the harbour area of Rotterdam. The course is at BSc level (in English) and has been particularly designed for people working in the oils and fats sector.
The course will focus on the food safety aspects related to the vegetable oils and fats chain starting from the arrival at the port of Rotterdam until the receipt at the margarine plant. The course will combine theoretical lectures by experts from the industry with excursions to an oil storage facility, a refinery and a margarine factory.
This year, the course includes an extra optional day on 'Sustainably Sourcing' on Monday 11 April 2011, which will include updates on the latest state of play within the RSPO and the RTRS.
For more details see the pre-announcement MVO course 2011.
The course fee is € 450,- for MVO companies and € 500,- for non-MVO companies and covers lectures, course materials, plant visits, boat trip, drinks, three lunches and one course diner on the 13th of April. EC publishes guidance document on aflatoxins controls
Maximum levels of aflatoxins (aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1) are laid down in Commission Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as amended by Commission Regulation (EU) No 165/2010.
In order to assist the competent authorities on the official control of aflatoxin contamination in food products, a guidance document for competent authorities for the control of compliance with EU legislation on aflatoxins has recently been elaborated.
This guidance document focuses mainly on the official control of aflatoxin contamination in food products which are subject to Commission Regulation (EC) No 1152/2009 of 27 November 2009 imposing special conditions governing the import of certain foodstuffs from certain third countries due to contamination risk by aflatoxins. Nevertheless, the provisions in this guidance document are also applicable, where relevant, to the control of aflatoxins in food products not subject to Commission Regulation (EC) 1152/2009.
EFISC certification ADM plant
On the 10th of November 2010, the oilseed crushing facility of ADM in Straubing, Germany, was successfully certified according to the European Feed Ingredients Safety Code. The audit was performed by the certification body SGS.
Meanwhile five plants have been certified according to EFISC (European Feed Ingredients Safety Certification), one in Germany and four in Italy. Another six plants (three in the Netherlands, one in Poland, one in Slovakia and another one in Germany) are in the process of being audited.
The aim of the code is to provide safe feed for animals and consequently safe food to consumers further up the food chain by making the best use of the experience and expertise of the industry. To achieve this goal, the code provides guidance for companies on how to establish their own feed safety management system in accordance with the relevant EU legislation. The code includes requirements for management systems, prerequisite programmes, risk control (hazard analysis critical control points), withdrawal and traceability.
EFISC promotes good practices in the industrial manufacturing of safe feed materials. The code was developed as a result of the shared commitment between the starch industry (AAF) and the oilseed crushing, oil refining and protein meal industry (FEDIOL) within the framework of the European Feed Ingredients Platform (EFIP), in consultation with the European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC ).
More information is available on the EFISC website.
Amendment of rules official controls food and feed imports
From 1 January 2011, Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 669/2009 will undergo changes. Regulation (EC) No 669/2009 applies as from 25 January 2010 and lays down rules concerning the increased level of official controls to be carried out on imports of feed and food of non-animal origin at the designated points of entry into the EU.
Occurrence and relevance of food incidents notified through the Rapid Alert System for Feed and Food (RASFF), findings of the various missions to third countries carried out by the Food and Veterinary Office, as well as the quarterly reports which the Member States have submitted to the Commission indicate that there is a need to review the list in Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 669/2009.
For this reason, Annex I of this regulation is replaced by the text in the Annex of Regulation (EU) No 1099/2010. The amendments enter into force on 1 January 2011 onwards and concern in particular changes in controls for groundnuts, fruits and vegetables, dried and fresh herbs and spices from various origins.
