Congress Report

Euro Fed Lipid Congress 'Oils and fats for a healthy and sustainable world'

From Sunday 18 September to Wednesday 21 September the 9th Euro Fed Lipid Congress was held in de Doelen in Rotterdam. The theme of this year's edition was: 'Oils and fats for a healthy and sustainable world'. The congress was well attended by slightly over 600 professionals and scientists representing 51 countries. The scientific programme included 160 lectures, of which 5 plenary lectures and 12 keynote lectures whilst 325 posters were presented on display.

One of the aims of the annual Euro Fed Lipid congress is to promote the exchange of ideas between scientists and to provide an update concerning the scientific knowledge in the field of oils, fats and lipids. A scientific committee of 22 professionals and scientists working in the field of oils and fats had succeeded in putting together a high quality programme on the main topics as analytics, biochemistry, health and disease, milk, dairy products and animal science, oil seeds and plant breeding oleochemistry, biodiesel, olive oil, oxidation and deep frying, palm oil, physical chemistry, processing and sustainability.

This year the two main themes of the congress were the issues Health and Disease and Sustainability. Next to the regular Health and Disease sessions there was a symposium organised especially designed to comprehensively discuss the subject of saturated fatty acids in nutrition.

Sustainability was for the first time on the agenda and got a significant attention during the congress. The Product Board for Margarine, Fats and Oils (MVO) had composed four sustainability sessions which resulted in a very diverse group of speakers discussing topics like food security, sustainable sourcing of soy, rapeseed and palm oil and life cycle assessments of oils and fats. The social programme of the congress included a boat tour through the Rotterdam harbour which was sponsored by MVO. About 130 people participated on the boat trip which gave a unique view of the harbour, including the oils and fats companies situated in the Rotterdam harbour.

Below, you will find the summaries of the different sessions in which the Product Board MVO was present (including some pdf-files of presentations). This includes brief summaries of the sessions concerning Health and Disease, Sustainability, some of the Processing sessions and one session about Milk and Dairy products and Health. Hopefully, for those who were not at the congress, these summaries will give such an impression of this valuable congress, that it will convince them to participate in the 10th Euro Fed Lipid congress in 2012 which will be held in Cracow, Poland (23-26 September 2012). Abstract submission for the next congress has already started.
