MVO statement feed labelling

Refined vegetable oil and animal fat of food-grade quality that comply with Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs and Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 laying down specific hygiene rules for food of animal origin, are not only sold to the food industry but also to the feed industry. Some feed companies have very high quality requirements (e.g. the calf milk replacers) and consequently demand oils and/or fats of food-grade quality.

Considering that the destination of the product does not alter the product itself, the Product Board for Margarine, Fats and Oils (MVO) holds the view that a food-safe product may be transported and handled as such regardless the final destination. In case this product goes to a feed company, MVO therefore states that assessing the intended purpose (i.e. the re-grading to feed) could take place at the gate of the feed company. The transport of this food-safe product to the feed company may take place in a food truck or either via dedicated transport. However, from the instance it arrives on the premises of the feed company, the destination as well as the intended use are absolutely clear. Hence, MVO is in the opinion that it has to be labelled and handled as such from this moment onwards.

Following this procedure, the oil or fat producing company can herewith, in addition, insure the feed company of the receipt of a high quality food-grade product.
