 Biobased Economy

Oilseeds are composed of proteins, fats and several micro-components. These proteins and fats can be raw materials for the producing of building blocks which serve as a basis for semi-manufactured articles and materials (chemicals). Micro-components often have a very specific application and for that reason a high value. For a long time fats are used, in the oleochemical industry, as raw materials for chemicals, materials and products. When it comes to proteins, this process is just beginning.

The advantages of bio-based materials are that the raw materials are renewable and that its products are not or less toxic and in many cases better bio-degradable. Such products are less imposing the environment and human health in general, and the health of the employees who have to work with these materials in particular.

Examples of bio-based applications are:

Polymers
Detergents
Lubricants
Oils for formwork removing
Softeners in plastics
Synthetic materials
Coatings, paints, resins and glues

Dutch government policy in regard to the bio-based economy has been laid down in the "overheidsvisie Biobased Economy" (in Dutch).
